Kamandura, Kiambu County — November 28, 2025: President William Ruto has officially launched the construction of the Rironi–Mau Summit road project, a major infrastructure undertaking positioned to transform one of Kenya’s most vital transport corridors. The project is being implemented through a public–private partnership (PPP) between the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Kenya’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF), at an estimated cost of USD 863 million (approximately KSh 170–200 billion).
Spanning roughly 170 kilometers from Rironi to Mau Summit, the upgrade will convert the current two-lane highway into a modern four-lane dual carriageway, with a six-lane stretch between Naivasha and Nakuru. The enhanced road design—complete with new interchanges—is expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and significantly reduce travel times for motorists and commercial transporters.
The Rironi–Mau Summit corridor is a critical commercial lifeline linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley and western Kenya, and further connecting to regional hubs including Kericho, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Malaba. As part of the Northern Corridor, it supports nearly 40% of Kenya’s trade traffic and serves as a key gateway for goods moving across East Africa.
In tandem with this project, the government is also advancing the expansion of the adjacent Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha road, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade to meet rapidly increasing traffic demands. Though previously delayed due to financial and structural challenges, the project’s revamped PPP framework is designed to deliver efficient and timely completion, with commissioning targeted for 2027.
Speaking at the launch, President Ruto underscored the economic and social significance of the initiative, noting that improved infrastructure is essential to boosting trade, enhancing regional integration, and driving shared prosperity.
